Potential 2020 Democratic Presidential candidate, and former Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg had some unpleasant things to say about medical cannabis.
“We have a different kind of problem in America, for example. Last year, in 2017, 72,000 Americans [overdosed] on drugs. In 2018, more people than that are OD-ing on drugs, have OD’d on drugs. And today, incidentally, we are trying to legalize another addictive narcotic, which is perhaps the stupidest thing anybody has ever done. We’ve got to fight that, and that’s another thing that Bloomberg Philanthropies will work on it in public health.”
That’s right he called cannabis legalization “the stupidest thing anyone has ever done”!
A strange thing for a Democratic politician like Bloomberg to say. The democratic party has long since had a favorable view on cannabis reform, and most of the American voters today agree that cannabis should be legalized. Over 30 states have legalized cannabis in one form or another and that includes 10 states who have legalized it for adult use.
Taking a stance against cannabis in this day and age seems like political suicide.
Let’s not forget that Bloomberg is also one of the richest people in the world. Legal cannabis is estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars. It would seem like Bloomberg would understand how the US can gain economically from cannabis legalization.
