20 Nov House Committee Approves Bill to Legalize Cannabis
House Judiciary Committee is Really Trying to Legalize Cannabis
The House Judiciary Committee approved a bill Wednesday that legalizes marijuana on the federal level. This would remove cannabis for Schedule 1 status on the Controlled Substance Act. Which would be exactly what this whole cannabis movement has been working for!
What are the Chances it Will Pass?
The legislation passed with a 24 to 10 vote and it has a high chance of approval in the House. Democrats control the House with 234 seats. Once the bill is approved by the House it will have to make its way through the Senate, which it is expected to have a tougher time getting passed. Currently the Senate is Republican controlled, and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell opposes marijuana legalization.
According to congress.gov the bill has more than 50 co-sponsors. Backers of the Senate version of the legislation include presidential contender Sen. Kamala.
What is the Bill All About?
However, the legislation seems solid. The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), has called the legislation the “biggest marijuana news of the year”. The bill allows states to enact their own policies and gives them incentives to clear criminal records of people with low level marijuana offenses. There is also a provision that allows a 5% tax on cannabis products that would provide job training and legal assistance to those affected hardest by our country’s backward drug policies.
