23 Nov Vaping is Safer than Smoking: Let’s Not Confuse that Message!
We have gone as far to call the small amount of issues the vaping industry a “crisis”.
Let’s make this clear. This “vaping crisis” was nowhere near a crisis. Some people have been harmed by faulty vaping products. This is horrible! We feel for these people and scorn these “underground entrepreneurs” who make products that cause pain and suffering to those who consume it. But that’s also why we need to take a step back and look at the situation.
Vaping is an alternative to smoking cigarettes. Tobacco kills about half the people who use it and cigarettes are the deadliest consumer products out on the market. The real crisis is the tobacco industry! And the biggest problem with the “vaping crisis” is all the press it is getting.
People are Starting to get Confused!
The number of people who think e-cigarettes pose a similar danger to conventional cigarettes is rising in the US. This is according to a new study posted by JAMA this week. The percentage of adults who believe e-cigarettes are less harmful than regular cigarettes dropped from 29% to 26% between 2017 to 2018. Also, the percentage of people who believe e-cigarettes are as harmful as cigarettes increased from 36% to 43%.
Bear in mind, this survey was done before the “vape crisis” happened. If this survey were to be conducted again, it would probably show staggering results against vaping.
We Need to Start Educating People on the Differences Between Vaping and Smoking.
Ideally, we would not want non-smokers to pick up a vaping habit. But the truth is, if you smoke cigarettes, you may want to pick up vaping as an alternative. There is no FDA approved vaping product for quitting smoking but switching over to vaping may reduce their risk of tobacco related disease. That is because of the overwhelming evidence that vaping is safer to smoking.
By buying into the “vaping crisis” we might be doing more harm than good. We don’t want to see people consuming nicotine. However, by advertising vaping to be as harmful as cigs we may be pointing people to cigarettes, which I’m sure is just what big tobacco wants.
