31 Oct What are CBD Dabs?
One of the most profound things we do at Chillum CBD Dispensary is our $5 CBD dabs. When someone walks into our store, in Historic Ybor City, and asks, “What is CBD? What does it do?”. It is a great tool at our disposal to be able to say, “I’ll show you! Have a CBD Dab!”.
When we first opened the store, on a busy night where it was just me and the other owner, we had a girl in the store burst into tears right after taking her CBD dab hit. We stopped everything in the store and immediately went to assess the situation. Turns out the tear were tears of joy! “This is the first time in a long time that I don’t feel any pain”, she explained to us. Although I can’t remember the name of the condition this girl suffers from, she almost always experienced sharp pains throughout her whole body. After taking the dab hit, she not only felt better but she wasn’t high.
Things like this happen all the time in our store. But what is dabbing? Why is it such a great way to consume cannabinoids?
What is Dabbing?
Dabbing requires some sort of oily, concentrated form of hemp or cannabis. The active ingredients (cannabinoids and terpenoids) in these plants are oil based, and an extraction process is used to extract these oils. This “extraction process” typically involves some sort of solvent to pull the active ingredients, like CBD, away from unwanted plant matter. Once the active ingredients are extracted, then the goal is to evaporate the solvent. When done properly, once the solvent is evaporated thoroughly, all that is left are the cannabinoids and terpenoids. Solventless extractions, or Rosin, are becoming more and more popular. Rosin involves applying heat and pressure to the plant material to squeeze out these oils. Once the extraction is completed, the dab wax can take on many kinds of consistency: shatter, wax, crumble, sauce. One isn’t necessarily better than the other. Normally just boils down to a personally preference.
To do a CBD dab, you must melt the dab wax. Typically done with a type of water pipe called an “oil rig” or an electronic vaporizer, when done properly there is no combustion. When the dab wax is melted, typically in a small quartz bucket called a banger nail. While the dab melts it emits a vapor that is inhaled. inhaling this vapor is one of the most concentrated forms of oh inhaling cannabinoids.
There are also vaporizers that can be used as a more portable form of dabbing. It is difficult to find a vaporizer that is as efficient as a dab rig though.
Why Dab CBD?
Traditionally CBD is used in some sort of edible form or a sublingual drop. Although the bioavailability of these methods is higher than inhalation, they suffer from one flaw. That is they take a while to kick in. Edibles can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours to work. Since people typically us CBD to help with some sort of pain and anxiety…. 1 to 2 hours can seem like a lifetime to find relief. A CBD dab is a way to get a concentrated dose that will kick in almost immediately.
