25 Nov What is Anandamide?
What is Anandamide? It is an important part of the endocannabinoid system, an important part of how the human body regulates itself, and it is also the “bliss molecule”!
The Endocannabinoid System
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a network of receptors, molecules, and enzymes that work together to help maintain cellular balance and over all regulation, or homeostasis, within the body. By maintaining this balance, the ECS allows cells, organs, and systems to function optimally. All vertebrates, or animals with spines, have an endocannabinoid system.
How did We Find Out About the Endocannabinoid System?
We discovered the endocannabinoid system while researching the effects of consuming cannabis on the human body. We first discovered the existence of cannabinoids outside of the human body, like THC and CBD, which are found in cannabis and hemp. Next, we found out that our own bodies produce chemicals similar to these cannabinoids.
You produce a chemical similar to the chemical composition, and with similar effects, to THC and CBD!
What Does the Endocannabinoid System Do?
Endogenous (made within the body) cannabinoids act as a key to the endocannabinoid system. By producing these endocannabinoids our body is capable of regulating its own functions. This includes functions like appetite, sleep, mood regulation, neuro protection and immune function.
One of these endocannabinoids, and a very important part to the endocannabinoid system is anandamide. It acts similar to the cannabinoids found in cannabis and plays a crucial part in maintaining the balance the endocannabinoid system provides.
What is Anandamide?
A testament to its mood enhancing properties, anandamide is also known as the bliss molecule. It interacts with endocannabinoid receptors similar to the way THC does. It is a neurotransmitter and cannabinoid receptor dining agent that functions as a signal messenger for cannabinoid receptors located in the body.
Our bodies create endocannabinoids, including anandamide, to be used when homeostasis is needed. Or when things aren’t functioning right, the body releases anandamide to bring everything back to normal. Anandamide is capable of regulating things like inflammation and neuron signaling and has a profound impact on several physiological mechanisms, including appetite stimulation, mood fluctuation, pain management, and even fertility.
