19 Dec Who is Jack Herer?
You may have come across a strain of cannabis bearing his name. You may have heard stories about him from a cannabis activist. But who is this guy? Jack Herer dedicated his life to the legalization of cannabis, and, at the time, he did so in a very different way. He preached about the legalization of cannabis by preaching about the hemp plant. Jack Herer is important because he changed the game.
Who is Jack Herer? Who was the man behind the legend? In this article, we are going to look at this pioneer who changed the future of cannabis across America.
Who is Jack Herer?
Herer was born to a conservative family in Buffalo, New York on June 1939. He was a typical republican who served as a military policeman during the Korean War. He was 30 years old when he moved to Los Angeles and discovered marijuana.
Maybe he was upset that he was lied to, or maybe he was upset that he was living a lie. But from the beginning, Herer was a firm believer in the power of cannabis. It appears Jack Herer changed his whole life instantly, making legalization and spreading the word about cannabis his life mission.
The Emperor Wears No Clothes
It is obvious that Herer immersed himself into the plant and researched cannabis thoroughly. He was able to compile his findings into a book called The Emperor Wears No Clothes. This book became the corner stone to the cannabis movement.
Herer spent 10 years working on the Emperor Wears No Clothes. To this day the book is cited in discussions for the legalization of cannabis in many states working on legalization.
During Herer’s day, the discussion about cannabis legalization was centered around proving that the use of cannabis was a victimless crime. What Herer’s book did was prove that cannabis was made illegal around economic interests that revolved around the hemp plant. That entrepreneurs who were heavily invested in things like paper and plastics (all things hemp competes with) put pressure on politicians and government agencies to make cannabis illegal. His book also dives into the advantages of the hemp and cannabis plant and how cannabis had been used as a medicine and food for hundreds of years before it was made illegal.
Herer changed the game. He changed the discussion, made a more compelling argument for legalization, and did it all by educating.
The Hemperor’s Legacy
Jack Herer spent 40 years traveling America spreading his legacy of Hemp. His belief that hemp could be used as a sustainable fuel, food, and that it can be grown anywhere in America made his the most influential cannabis activist of all time.
Herer died in 2010 at the age of 70, but his legacy remains strong! There are festivals and celebrations held in his name regularly and he is quoted often in the cannabis discussion.
“I don’t know if Hemp will save the world, but it is the only thing that can.”-Jack Herer
Every year they hold a Jack Herer Cup in Las Vegas to celebrate the Hemperor’s legacy. The Dutch seed company Sensi Seeds developed an award winning strain named after Herer to celebrated his impact.
Although cannabis legalization is still very much a struggle, there have been major strides toward legalization in recent years. It is very possible that we owe this to Jack Herer and his many contributions to our movement.
